Follow Us on SMM
We know the benefits of social media marketing because we live in this space. We are active in all the major communities, including:
Twitter, much like Facebook, is a conversation-based site where people can follow what you are up to. People search for others (search.twitter.com) who have similar interests and are involved in similar activities. Once you are involved, both by following others and building your own community of followers, you can update your status as many times a day as you wish. Use updates to inform people of promotions, new products/services, or anything you want to share with your fellow friends. Twitter users can see their friends’ status updates and reply quickly to each other’s thoughts and recommendations. Once exposed, you can generate traffic to links on your site, as long as they are helpful. Although you are restricted to 140 characters per update, the site http://tinyurl.com allows you to shorten links that may be too long to fit. There are separate programs, like tweetdeck, that enable you to receive your “tweets” and that will also create tinyurl’s for you. Although time consuming at first, Twitter can help you build a reliable informative community of followers.
The majority of people using this site are true professionals, so there are abundant marketing opportunities available here. You can boost your profile by adding recommendations from other LinkedIn users. You can search for professionals in a specific area, with certain skills, by company names, or look for people you went to school with or from a particular part of the world. Joining groups and interacting with members allows you to network with people and gain potential business. As with most social media sites, you must be careful not to spam or promote yourself too much. Engage in meaningful conversations and share meaningful information. New applications on LinkedIn allow you to feed your blog, share a presentation, collect data using polls etc., all of which appears on your profile. You can also create a personal URL that you can share with others on your Website or other social media channels.
Facebook has about 9 million users around the world. Although the bulk of users are middle-class teens, Facebook has lately become a marketing tool that companies are using to present themselves as hip and fun. There are many opportunities for promotion. Facebook now sells advertising space in the sidebars of its pages. For minimal cost you can create a Facebook flyer to display on the site 10,000 times a day. You can create events that people join for free, inviting anyone, including non-Facebook users. Or, create a free group for your target demographic. You can even create your own business profile and add pages to that feed your blog, list events, pictures, and videos.
MySpace
Although it has the most users of any social media site, MySpace’s profiles are not tailored for marketing. Regular company profiles are seen as spam. MySpace is not a professional networking site, so its main benefit is in getting a link exposed. Unlike other sites, you are not as likely to gain “friends” on MySpace. You can add your company to a few like-minded groups and post comments or information, but you must be careful not to add random people or spam groups. You should always try to create a professional-looking page and stick with a standard layout that avoids gimmicks like glitter and flashing items. MySpace is useful for some links and offers some potential for new contacts, but overall it is not a particularly valuable marketing tool.
