Kim excellent post and you have a couple very valid points. To embrace social media when the money is sparse is a much better tactic then to pull out of a social media initiative. Awareness has just released a free whitepaper called "Integrating social media into your marketing mix: A case for social media marketing in a recession"

You are completely right, Kim! An important point is that social media is free for the end user so it is the perfect place for a company to be during a recession. After all, if the person in your example chooses the Starbucks, what will she do instead of going to the movies? Spend the night chatting on Facebook, twittering, entertaining herself wathing videos on YouTube? Absolutely.
